At least 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime

A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, in addition to numerous weapons.

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
