‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with the Basque club

Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward played in England, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he converted. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, well, he did it once more. When he returned to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about Man United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the demands of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the Champions League, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but every phase you progress through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: execute them.

“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed upset in 2020, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually the requirement appears where you play, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
