Jude Bellingham Needs to Cut Out the Immature behavior to Reclaim a Key Position Under Manager Thomas Tuchel.
Should Bellingham hopes to fight his way into the English best squad, he would be wise to do away with the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that his number was about to come up after an evening of uneven play in the match against Albania fell short of expectations.
"I prefer not to make more out of it but I hold to my words 'behaviour is key' and respect for the players who come in," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you need to comply when you're on the field."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had only moments earlier made it the Three Lions leading by two in a meaningless match, with only six minutes remaining and the player, who had not played particularly well, had just been booked for fouling the Albanian striker. This was hardly a questionable change. Actually it would have been unwise for the manager to leave Bellingham on because there was a risk he would be suspended of the opening game of the competition by picking up a second caution.
Turning the Spotlight Upon Himself
However, the player drew all eyes toward himself. No one could overlook the young midfielder's annoyance when he clocked that his replacement was ready for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he exchanged a handshake while heading to the touchline it was obvious that the head coach was displeased.
This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He praised Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Harry Kane to nod home his second of the night, but everything else was self-defeating. There was no chance arguing was going to change Tuchel’s mind. Tuchel has talked so much about following squad protocols and the importance of showing proper conduct.
In the Spotlight
He, omitted from the previous squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the fold in the current camp. In effect his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to coming off the pitch as the side completed a perfect qualifying campaign by defeating a feisty challenge from Albania.
Tactics and Formation
This implies opinions are divided on if the squad operate most effectively when Bellingham plays. The performance was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager in the beginning. Under him, England have gained the squad organization and direction lately, employing a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different against Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, the midfielder made his first start for England and the use of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder meant there was passing resemblance to Manchester City’s team that won three trophies.
Inconsistent Display
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed trying too hard. He made many hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent early on. England's play was messy during most of the second period. One Albania chance followed he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when an opponent took the ball from Broja and committed a foul on Broja.
Substitutes Decide
In the end England’s depth proved crucial. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who seemed more comfortable to the role that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka whipped in a set-piece for Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that dead-ball situations will be crucial next summer.
Connection Remains
Nevertheless, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was partly forgotten due to the fuss of the player change. When the match concluded, the focus was on the midfielder. The coach approached from behind and directed Bellingham towards the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. The coach isn't ready to give up on the player just yet. But if Tuchel is inclined to offer him a starring role is still uncertain.
